What does an air fryer cost to run?

The air fryer earned its popularity for a reason. It is a small fan-forced oven, so it heats a tiny enclosed space and reaches temperature in a couple of minutes instead of fifteen. That quick warm-up is where a lot of its efficiency comes from: you are not paying to preheat a big empty cavity before the cooking even starts.

At around 1,400-2,000W it is not low-wattage, and the label can look surprisingly close to a small oven's. But it runs for a short time over a small volume, so for one or two portions it costs a fraction of firing up a full electric oven. Wattage alone, as ever, does not tell the whole story; run time and the space being heated matter just as much.

The catch is scale. For a single tray of chips or reheating a few things, it is clearly cheaper than the big oven, and noticeably faster to boot. This is the job it was built for and where it genuinely shines on a power bill.

Cook for a whole family across multiple batches, though, and the advantage shrinks, because you are running it again and again. Three or four back-to-back loads to feed everyone starts to look a lot like just using the oven you were trying to avoid, only in instalments.

So the honest rule is to think about how much you are cooking, not just which appliance feels more efficient. A big family meal that fills the oven in one go may well beat the air fryer run four times over. Match the tool to the size of the job.

Used for what it is good at, the quick small cooks, it is a real saver. Weeknight snacks, a portion or two of chips, reheating leftovers to crisp rather than soggy: this is where it comfortably beats the alternatives and does it faster.
