Power bill costs in Cambridge

Cambridge is prosperous, growing, and unusually well supplied with modern housing for a Waikato town, and all three facts show up in local power bills. New subdivisions on the town's edges are built to current insulation and glazing standards, and homes like that are inexpensive to heat in a climate as mild as this one. The older streets nearer the centre, with their established villas and mature trees, are a different proposition.

Waipa Networks runs the local lines. It is a small, community-owned network serving a compact and comparatively densely settled district, which is a favourable combination: it keeps the rate here only a little above the national average, and below the rural King Country networks further south.

The Waikato's distinguishing winter feature is fog. Cold, still mornings with the fog sitting on the river flats until late are routine from May onward, and while the temperature is not extreme, the persistent damp makes houses feel colder than they measure. This is the classic case where a dehumidifier earns its keep: drier air at the same temperature is noticeably more comfortable, which means the heat pump can come down a degree.

Those still mornings do include frosts, and heat pump efficiency dips accordingly, though nothing like as severely as in the South Island. A unit in Cambridge spends the great majority of its operating hours in an efficient range, which makes it the obvious heating choice and keeps winter costs modest in a well-built house.

With heating relatively cheap, the loads that run continuously become the interesting part of a Cambridge bill. Hot water is typically the largest single item. Beyond that, this is a district with a lot of lifestyle blocks and equestrian property on its fringes, and rural connections carry loads that town advice never mentions: water pumps, tack-room heaters, float and workshop power, stable lighting, and float-charging on assorted vehicles. Individually small, collectively significant, and almost never reviewed once installed.

Households in newer homes should also be careful not to over-specify. An oversized heat pump in a tightly built house short-cycles rather than running steadily, which is less efficient and less comfortable than a correctly sized unit. Bigger is not cheaper here.
