Power bill costs in Greymouth

Greymouth receives something in the order of two and a half metres of rain a year. That figure explains more about local power bills than the tariff does, because on the West Coast the enemy is moisture rather than temperature. Winters are mild by South Island standards, and the coast almost never delivers the deep still frosts that punish heat pumps in Otago or inland Canterbury.

The trouble is that damp air takes more energy to warm than dry air, and it carries heat away from the body faster, so it feels colder than the thermometer claims. A Greymouth household ends up running heaters higher and longer than an identical household inland at the same recorded temperature, and paying for the difference.

This is why moisture control, not heating capacity, is the main lever here. Extraction over the shower and the cooktop stops water entering the air in the first place. A dehumidifier removes what is already there, and does it for a small fraction of what it costs to drive the same moisture out with a heater. Drier air at nineteen degrees is more comfortable than damp air at twenty-one, and considerably cheaper.

Subfloors deserve particular attention on the Coast. A lot of older Greymouth housing sits on piles over ground that is wet for most of the year, with bare boards and no barrier between the two. Moisture rises through that gap continuously, and a ground vapour barrier plus underfloor insulation attacks the problem at its source rather than treating the symptom upstairs.

Westpower runs the network, and the rate is at the expensive end of the national range. The reason is structural and not much affected by anything a household can do: a long, geologically difficult, weather-exposed stretch of coast requires a lot of line, that line takes a beating, and there are relatively few connections to carry the cost of maintaining it.

Because each unit is dear, the loads that run continuously are worth more attention here than in a cheap district. A dryer working overtime through a Coast winter is a large and often unexamined cost, and a heat pump dryer uses a fraction of what a vented one does, which in this climate pays back faster than the national figures suggest. The same logic applies to a second fridge, a spa pool, or a towel rail on a permanent circuit.

The mild temperatures do mean a heat pump is an excellent fit for the Coast, once the house has been dealt with. It is the driest, cheapest heat available here, and in a properly sealed and ventilated home it does not need to work hard.
